Summary
Rats have a close relationship with the human beings society. When and where did the rats' origin begin? And how did they spread all over the world? To address these issues, Dr. Toshihide Yoshida, a scientist of the National Institute of Genetics, Mishima, Japan, has been pursuing the phylogeny of rats by a karyotype analysis. He observed that there were two distinct karyotypes of chromosomes among normal roof rats in Japan. After an investigation conducted in the whole of Japan, he finally demonstrated that localization of rats was notably according to areas showing different climatic zones called the 50cm-snowfall line. Evidence suggested that one of the types came from China through Korea and then spread all over the land first. After little while, the other different type landed from south and they mixed. This hypothesis was supported by his first and second field researches in Asia together with the artificial cross experiments in the lab.
In 1975, this film was awarded an excellent prize at the National Arts Festival sponsored by the Ministry Education and Culture in Japan. When the film was honorably screened, audiences paid attention enormously as they fixedly gazed at it. They seemed to be turning their thoughts towards evolution of rats and human beings, and a relationship between environment and life on the earth.
